The Mission

Utility line and substation inspection by drone changes the safety and cost profile of an inspection program that traditionally requires bucket trucks, helicopter overflights, or lineworker climb-ups. Aerial inspection captures every span, every insulator, every connection at safe standoff without de-energizing the line.

Transmission and distribution line inspection. Visual documentation of every conductor, insulator, cross-arm, and connection along the right-of-way. Structural condition of poles, towers, and hardware documented at high resolution. Flagged findings include broken insulators, corroded connections, damaged conductors, and structural deterioration — the exact conditions that cause outages and warrant NERC PRC-005 maintenance action.

Thermal inspection of connections and equipment. Radiometric thermal imaging catches hot spots on connections, insulators, transformers, and switchgear before they fail. Hot connections indicate loose hardware, corrosion, or overloading — all catastrophic failure precursors. Per NFPA 70B thermographic protocols (adapted for aerial). Especially valuable on substations and older transmission corridors.

Vegetation management and right-of-way. RTK-mapped orthomosaic of the entire ROW documents vegetation encroachment, trim requirements, and clearing zones. Compare year-over-year to track growth patterns and prioritize trim scheduling. Reduces both outage risk and unnecessary trimming cost.

Post-storm line assessment. Same-day aerial documentation of down lines, damaged structures, and access road conditions after named storms — restoration teams get accurate damage assessment before crews are dispatched, drastically reducing mobilization inefficiency.
